BAFA is Germany’s Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control. Its “Consulting for SMEs” programme provides grants towards external advice for eligible small and medium-sized businesses. Advice may address financial, organisational, staffing and other management questions.
What could this mean for you?
Under the current programme rules, businesses in Saxony-Anhalt may receive up to 80% of eligible consulting costs, capped at €2,800. You pay the remaining share and VAT. Eligibility and the amount are assessed individually; funding is not guaranteed. Status: October 2026; the current guidelines run until 31 December 2026.

Check and apply
We assess the requirements. Your business applies online through BAFA; I can help if you authorise me. Businesses in their first year also need a free information meeting with a regional partner.
Wait for written clearance
The consulting contract and the consulting work may start only after the intermediary’s information letter permits this. Funding cannot be applied for retrospectively.
Consulting and evidence
We work on your topics and prepare the report. You then submit the required evidence on time. BAFA makes the final grant decision.

Can a new business use this programme?
The programme is for existing small and medium-sized businesses and self-employed professionals. Additional requirements apply in the first year. Before founding a business, we can consider other routes.
Is the consulting free?
No. BAFA provides a grant towards eligible costs. You initially pay the full invoice and bear your own share and VAT. Any grant is paid after the final review.
Can we start immediately?
We can have an informal first conversation. We sign the contract for funded consulting only after the intermediary’s information letter has arrived.
Which topics can we work on during the consultancy?
For example, we can look at customer acquisition, your cost structure, working processes or the strategic development of your business. In the initial consultation, we clarify your goal and identify the topics and practical actions that make sense for you.
